In August, Germany released estimates that Immigration for 2015 would reach 800,000. As of today (December 7th) that has soared over 965,000. Estimates for November alone reach 206,000
Angela Merkel's risky political move is testing Germany's ability to register and provided assistance to the new comers. In light of the mounting threats posed by the Islamic State, safety thought-out the European Union is at a major point of concern.
Just over 50% are Syrians fleeing the conflict zone and other refugee camps. The second largest groups are from Afghanistan (13%) and Iraq (10%).
IMPACTS & RISKS
1. Safety is the number one concern, particularly among fellow EU members. Although it is a sensitive issue, it remains a top priority for political leaders as the international effort to combat the Islamic State intensifies. Some fear immigrants are easy targets for influencing. This is magnified by weaker integration. The resettlement theory concludes that an increased effort to integrate the refugees into Germany will decrease the likelihood of ISILs ability to infiltrate and influence.
2. From a business perspective, the influx will serve to revitalize Germany's work force. Increases in labor, skilled and unskilled, could increase efficiency.
3. Germany's growth projections will rise as consumption and government spending to accommodate the influx of newcomers.
4. Recently arrived immigrants also create a new market/demographic opportunity in Germany for targeted products/services.
